Day 32: Visual Language

Abstract art uses a visual language to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.   (Rudolph Arnheim, Visual Thinking)  This is a great sentence and a good place to start when thinking about abstract art. Thinking in terms of visual language-what does that mean? It is very simple; a system or way of using visual elements to communicate. By using line, shape, color, form, motion, texture, pattern, direction, orientation, scale, angle, space and proportion a picture communicates a meaning to the viewer.

Lesson One is over
